HDR Workflow Shift: Light Sense and Bi-directional Tone Mapping?
Hey everyone, Troy here. I've been doing some digging into upcoming HDR tech, specifically hearing buzz about Dolby Vision 2's 'Light Sense' and this idea of bi-directional tone mapping. As a Grip, I'm usually focused on shaping the light on set, getting things ready for whatever camera the DP is running, lately it's been an AMIRA or a V-RAPTOR XL. We often work with SkyPanel S60-Cs and LS 600d Pros, making sure the lighting ratios are dialed for HDR delivery. My question is, how are these new technologies, like 'Light Sense' and bi-directional tone mapping, actually going to change our established HDR workflow and creative approach? Are we still going to be chasing those exact nits on set, or will the post-production flexibility be so much greater that it shifts how we light altogether? Any insights from those closer to the color pipeline would be hugely appreciated.
