Production Design for Documentary

Documentary Production Design New York, NY mid Budget: $250/day flat

An independent production is seeking a talented mid-level Production Designer for an upcoming documentary feature based in New York, NY. This project explores the vibrant, underground street art scene, focusing on the stories behind the most iconic, ephemeral works. We're aiming for a raw, authentic, and visually impactful tone, showcasing the artists' creative process and their urban environment. Your design work will primarily involve scouting, dressing, and sometimes lightly altering real-world locations to enhance their visual storytelling for the camera, often working with existing elements. Key responsibilities include collaborating with the director and DP to establish the visual aesthetic, sourcing props and set dressing that align with the documentary's themes, and managing the overall look of our interview and observational shoot locations. We're looking for someone with a strong eye for detail, experience working on documentary or unscripted projects, and a portfolio showcasing your ability to create compelling environments without heavy construction. You should be resourceful, adaptable, and comfortable with a fast-paced production environment. Experience with location-based design and a good understanding of visual storytelling are essential. This is a paid position at $250/day flat. The shoot is anticipated to happen across various dates in December 2026, with prep starting about 3 weeks prior. We are a small, collaborative team, and we will provide all necessary materials and transportation during shoots. Please submit your reel or portfolio and a brief statement of interest.
