One Movement Tool: Slider vs. Doorway Dolly vs. Gimbal?
Hey everyone,
I'm Sarah Chen, a DP, and I'm grappling with a decision for an upcoming project. It's a short film, mostly narrative scenes with some interview-style segments, and my budget only stretches to rent ONE significant camera movement tool for the shoot.
I'll be working with an ALEXA Mini and a set of Supreme Primes, so the camera package itself is solid. My internal debate is between a 4-foot slider, a doorway dolly, or a more robust gimbal setup like a Ronin 2. Each has its strengths, and I can envision uses for all three, but I just can't justify the cost of more than one rental this time around.
I’m looking for ways to elevate the visual storytelling beyond static shots, especially for character introductions and a few key emotional beats. I've used sliders extensively, and gimbals a fair bit, but the doorway dolly is less familiar to me in practice. How do you all weigh these options when you absolutely have to pick just one for diverse movement needs?
