Character Arcs in the Edit: When Theory Meets On-Set Reality

Hey everyone,

I'm Marcus, a director/writer constantly wrestling with the gap between script and screen. We spend so much time crafting character arcs, tying wants and needs together, ensuring every beat serves that journey. In theory, if it's well-constructed, it should survive the edit, right?

But let's be real, things rarely go to plan. On my last short, a pivotal scene for my lead's emotional turning point got severely trimmed due to location fees running over, leaving their final epiphany feeling unearned. I tried re-ordering some earlier reaction shots, but it felt like a Band-Aid.

I’m curious: when has a meticulously planned character arc of yours been completely derailed during production or post-production due to budget, schedule, or even an actor's performance not quite landing? And crucially, how did you adapt or salvage it?
