Reeltime Viewer on personal devices: Shifting set dynamics?
Hey everyone,
Sam Brennan here, I've been booming for about 10 years now, mostly narrative and commercial. Lately, I've been noticing more and more people pulling out their personal phones or tablets during takes to check shots on apps like Pomfort Reeltime Viewer. It's not just the director or DP anymore; producers, agency folk, even some PAs are tapping in.
On one hand, it feels like everyone's more connected to the creative vision, which is cool. But on the other, I've seen it lead to some weird moments, people commenting on a shot that the DIT or AC hasn't even had a chance to officially flag, or notes getting tossed around before the director even sees the take on a proper monitor. It sometimes feels like decisions are being made on smaller, less calibrated screens, bypassing the usual chain.
I'm genuinely curious: how are you all finding this trend is affecting the established on-set hierarchy and communication flow, for better or worse?
