Bootstrapping vs. Suggested Runway - How do you actually balance it?
Hey everyone,
I'm an AD, and I'm looking to direct a short film next year, hopefully building towards an indie feature. I've been doing a ton of research on budgeting and fundraising. A lot of the online guides for indie film budgeting throw out numbers like $800K+ for a 'proper' runway, even for smaller projects.
Simultaneously, I'm seeing a lot of advice about bootstrapping, using platforms like ShareGrid for gear, free software like DaVinci Resolve, and offering crew deferred payment or equity shares instead of full rates upfront. This is definitely the route I'd prefer to go, given my current capital.
My real question is: How do you practically reconcile these two seemingly opposing philosophies? If I'm aiming for quality but starting with minimal capital, relying on borrowed gear and crew goodwill, how do you bridge that gap without compromising the project or burning out your team? What's the realistic expectation for a project using these lean methods, when the 'official' advice points to such a massive financial cushion?
