Gaffer (Senior), Doc Series - Brooklyn
An independent production is seeking a senior Gaffer to lead our lighting team for an upcoming documentary series focusing on the vibrant, underground music scene in Brooklyn. This project offers an intimate look at emerging artists and unique venues, requiring a nuanced, adaptable approach to lighting that supports authentic storytelling. We need someone who can enhance the visual narrative without overpowering the real-world subjects. The aesthetic leans naturalistic, with a strong emphasis on mood and practical integration. Key responsibilities include designing and executing lighting plots, leading a small crew, managing gear, and collaborating closely with our DP to achieve the desired look. You'll be responsible for all aspects of on-set lighting, safety, and power distribution. Candidates must have extensive experience as a Gaffer on documentary or vérité-style productions, a strong reel demonstrating a sophisticated eye, and a deep understanding of various lighting setups, including LED, HMI, and practicals. Ownership of a basic lighting package (stands, flags, stingers, small LED fixtures) is preferred, though specialized equipment will be provided. The approximate shoot dates will be scattered throughout October 2026, totaling about 15-20 shoot days, generally 10-12 hour days. Production will provide meals, transportation to and from set within NYC, and a per-day kit fee for your personal gear. Compensation is negotiable based on experience and kit.
